From The Guardian Newspaper (UK) by Saeed Kamali Dehghan guardian.co.uk, Monday 14 May 2012 13.43 EDT Iranian rapper Shahin Najafi. A death sentence was issued against the rap artist after he released a controversial song called Naqi Photograph: Ay Collection/Sipa/Rex Features An Iranian rapper has become “the Salman Rushdie of music” after clerics in the Islamic republic issued fatwas calling him an apostate, which is considered punishable by death under the country’s sharia law. Shahin Najafi, a Germany-based Iranian singer, recently released a song with references to Ali al-Hadi al-Naqi, the tenth of the 12 Shia Muslim Imams, a religious figure highly respected by millions in Iran. The controversial clip posted on Youtube, watched by hundreds of thousands online, has divided opinions in the country with many finding it offensive and insulting to their beliefs and others defending the song, saying it broke taboos especially in regards to expressing views about religious personalities. When asked for a religious ruling on the fate of Najafi and his “blasphemous music”, clerics unanimously declared that such a person must be considered an apostate. According to the semi-official Mehr news agency, Ayatollah Naser Makareme Shirazi, a pro-Iranian regime cleric based in the holy city of Qom with a [...]

From Buffalo News Updated: May 12, 2012, 6:49 AM LOCKPORT — Two women from Niagara Falls were sentenced to weekend jail terms Friday for their hate crime assault on a Pakistani woman last summer. Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas ordered Sheree A. Sabater, 39, to four months of weekends in the County Jail and three years’ probation. Antoinette S. Ivey, 32, drew two months of weekends in jail and five years’ probation. The 26-year-old Muslim victim, who was walking with her two children July 14 near the Tops Market on Portage Road in Niagara Falls, was wearing a head scarf at the time, police said. “This woman and her two children were just minding their own business,” Farkas said. “These two drunk, high, out-of-control women, and I use that term loosely, pummeled her to the ground in front of her children.” The victim said in a later Buffalo News interview that she heard one of the attackers say, “She’s Pakistani and I want to kill her.” Continue reading story here…

From Reuters by Kevin MurphyMay 12, 2012 KANSAS CITY, Kansas (Reuters) – Kansas lawmakers have passed legislation intended to prevent the state courts or agencies from using Islamic or other non-U.S. laws in making decisions, a measure critics have blasted as an embarrassment to the state. The legislation, which passed 33-3 in the state Senate on Friday and 120-0 previously in the House, is widely known in Kansas as the “Sharia bill,” because the perceived goal of supporters is to keep Islamic code from being recognized in Kansas. The bill was sent to Republican Governor Sam Brownback, who has not indicated whether he will sign it. In interviews on Saturday, a supporter of the bill said it reassured foreigners in Kansas that state laws and the U.S. Constitution will protect them. But an opponent said the bill’s real purpose is to hold Islam out for ridicule. Kansas Representative Peggy Mast, a lead sponsor of the bill for the past two years, said the goal was to make sure there was no confusion that American laws prevailed on American soil. Mast said research showed more than 50 cases around the United States where courts or government agencies took laws from Sharia or [...]

From Houston Chronicle Standing behind the pulpit, addressing his modest 25-member congregation, Imam Khalis Rashaad preaches about time management, nutrition and economic empowerment at his new mosque in Houston’s Third Ward – a largely uncharted territory for Islamic centers. The rhetoric there is different from the more abstract spiritual sermons of its counterparts – the dozens of long-established suburban mosques in Sugar Land, Katy, Spring and Clear Lake. Leased in a strip mall on Almeda Road, the mosque is just getting by with member fees and donations that come in through the center’s Facebook page. No geometric designs or chandeliers adorn the ceiling, no domes or minarets mark the outside. Besides three pieces of Quranic tapestry, the walls at the three-month-old Ibrahim Islamic Center are bare. “It’s something to have a million-dollar mosque,” said the 39-year-old resident imam, “but if you have cheap projects and cheap ideas coming out of it, it just defeats the purpose.” Continue reading story here…

From Religion News Service 1 in 6 Americans Believe Obama Is A Muslim, Lest that 1 in 4 Can Identify Him As Protestant WASHINGTON (RNS) After nearly four years in the Oval Office, President Obama is incorrectly thought to be Muslim by one in six American voters, and only one quarter of voters can correctly identify him as a Protestant, according to a new poll. “Wow. He said it 100 times that he’s not a Muslim,” said Zainab Al-Suwaij, executive director of the American Islamic Congress, expressing surprise over the persistent number of American voters (16 percent) who make the mistake. Is there something insidious behind the belief, a concerted attack to link the president with a religion that’s considered alien — or worse — by some Americans? “I think it’s more a lack of information than an attack on him,” said Al-Suwaij. While Americans across the board get the president’s religion wrong, the religious group that most often thinks Obama is Muslim is white evangelical Protestants (24 percent). American unaffiliated with a religious group make the error least often: just 7 percent identify Obama as Muslim. Daniel Cox, PRRI’s research director, said the small but not insignificant sliver of [...]

From Bay Area 9 News FORT LAUDERDALE – Toddlers may be jokingly called terrors when they hit the “terrible twos,” but one little girl’s parents said their daughter was accused of being an actual terrorist. The family said the Transportation Security Administration and JetBlue have some explaining to do after ordering their 18-month-old daughter off a plane at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The couple, who asked not to be identified, said they were pulled from the plane because officials told them the toddler’s name was on a no-fly list. “It’s absurd,” said the girl’s father. “It made no sense. Why would an 18-month-old child be on a no-fly list?” Continue reading story here…

From CBS (credit: VCU journalism instructor Vivian Medina-Messner) RICHMOND, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — A woman dressed in a black burka was removed during President Obama’s inaugural re-election campaign stop at Virginia Commonwealth University Saturday. According to a White House pool report, photographers observed the woman being escorted out of the gym by Richmond police and othersecurity officials. The woman appeared to be wearing dark clothing and U.S. military pins and was carrying a book. She cooperated with police, according to the report. CBSDC obtained video of the incident from VCU journalism instructor Vivian Medina-Messner. In the video, you can hear the woman shouting while being escorted out of the building by police. VCU Police Chief John Venuti told CBS 6 WTVR that the Secret Service is now investigating the incident. Continue reading story here…
