Appearing onstage at a Washington, D.C. concert on Monday night, performance artist Madonna urged her fans to vote for President Barack Obama, who she called “a black Muslim.”
“Y’all better vote for fucking Obama, okay?” she said during a brief intermission. “For better or for worse, alright? We have a black Muslim in the White House. Now that’s some shit. That’s some amazing shit. It means there’s hope in this country.”
Madonna’s Muslim comment appeared to strike many in the audience as a joke, but it’s not clear if that’s how she indended it. The 54-year-old singer previously endorsed Obama by painting his name across her lower back.
Her comments came as she was speaking Monday night about the long struggle for civil rights in America, touching upon Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, then moving onto Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s trials during the civil rights movement.
