A Muslim community center in Portland, Maine was spray painted with “Osama today, Islam tomorrow,” “Long live the West” and “Free Cyprus” following morning prayers on Monday, the day after the U.S. killed Osama bin Laden, Talking Points Memo reported. The city’s police chief called the event a hate crime. The vandalism has been painted over.
In cities across the country, like Washington and Chicago, mosques are increasing their security and police have joined efforts to help protect Muslim communities from vandalism and violence. As Americans remember Sept. 11, it may re-ignite feelings of Islamophobia, some Muslims worry.
